What is responsible for the death?
It is because of several statements he has already made about the law with regard to sin.
Through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
The Law brings about wrath. Where there is no law, there is no violation.
sin is not imputed (charged) where there is no law.
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase.
Sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law.
the power of sin is the law.
Those under the law bear fruit for death.
We had to die to the law before we could bear fruit for God.
These statements are likely to be misunderstood unless he makes things perfectly clear.
IS THE LAW SIN?
Of course not!

ROM 7:7-12 is where Paul vindicates the Law.
We have a case of desire and death.
Sin is a death machine.
And sin wants to pay its wages to me.
Sin is waiting for its opportunity to strike.
Sin uses the Law to disguise its attack.
The coming of the Law provides sin with its opportunity.
Thou shall not desire.
Sin really gets fired up when it has an opportunity to produce TRANSGRESSIONS
Sin is anti-God and lives to stir up more anti-God activity.
