Sin is no longer our master.

NOT

I

There are three
“NOT I”s
for our spiritual life.

1. NOT I BUT
SIN.

2. NOT I BUT CHRIST.

3. NOT I BUT OTHERS.

NOT I BUT SIN.

NOT I BUT CHRIST.

NOT I BUT OTHERS.

1. NOT I BUT
SIN.

1PE 2:24

He died for our sins so we might die to sin.

Sin is the seat of the rebellion against God.

Sin encompasses
(1) our personal sins; (2) sin in our bodies;
(3) sin as a master.

(1) our personal sins;

(2) sin in our bodies: “the flesh”;

and
(3) sin as a master:
the bondage of sin.

Coming to know and believe that
Christ’s death to sin was your death to sin.

Sin still dwells in the members of our body - even after we have been redeemed.

But if you are a believer in Christ,
you died to sin.

ROM 6:1-11

In Rom 3-5, Christ died for us. He died for our sins.

In Rom 6, we died with Christ to sin.

ROM 6:1-2

What does it mean
to die to sin?

The Greek word for “died” in verse 2 is the verb
apothnesko

It means to die off (literally or figuratively)

to become wholly alienated from a thing, and freed from any connection with it.

To have no part in it.
To be separated from something.

To cease to have vital functions with it.

The death of Christ not only dealt with our sins;

it also ended our old relationship to sin itself.

Sin = the authority, power, and principle behind man’s rebellion against God.

ROM 6:6-7

We are no longer slaves to sin. Sin has no more authority over us.

We died to the REIGN of sin. We died to sin as our master.

ROM 6:2

In verse 2, we have the aorist active indicative of the verb apothnesko.

If you are a believer in Christ, this happened to you.
